August 2008 Fireside - Happiness Brother Michael Michael Rose from Chugach Stake- counselor, PhD from BYU. Bro. Rose shared facts of what people believe make someone happy compared to scientific evidence. Happiness has no correlation with wealth, race, climate, traumatic past, health, job, etc. There is a positive correlation between happiness and marriage and fundamental type of religions that give people hope. Also as people age they tend to be happier.
Negative people tend to believe bad events that happen to them are 1)permanent 2) pervasive 3) personal. A negative person experiencing a relationship break up assumes they will never marry, they are not good in any way, and it is only their fault. However, re a positive person may feel like that for a little while and then say I will meet someone else, this is only one person, and it is both of our faults - or I can learn from this and move on.
He talked about most people going through catastrophic life events (losing a job, etc) are all usually happy withing 8 weeks (even new paraplegics start adapting and adjust to new life).
83% of people consider themselves happier than the average person! There is scientific proof that happier people live longer and healthier lives.
He talked about us learning to be happy... and recommended the book 'Authentic Happiness'. Bro. Rose referred to scriptures on happiness and referenced that the plan of salvation is called "The great plan of "happiness". He pointed recommended "Preach my Gospel" as being a "manual for happiness". Specifically look at the chapter on Developing Christlike attributes. It is a very positive guide to life and the gospel. by on 8 Sep 2008, 1:34 PM |
Sept 2008 Fireside- Lynette Willis Sis. Willis talked on applying true Charity or the pure love of Christ in our lives. She had a poster of 3 doors - 1) Example 2) Love 3) Teach or share to the level of others willingness to receive.
The charge given by the Lord is to "Love Another". The Savior never withheld His love to control people, he always gave his love freely, just as we should as we learn to follow him. Sis. Willis described it as the "I love you program" is different than the "I trust you Program". The Savior always gives love, however at times he restricts what we can do (natural consequences) due to our own actions.
The Savior gave us many examples of how to love. One is of the woman who annointed the Savior's feet and bathed them with her tears. (Luke 7:47, John 12:7, Mark 14:8) To summarize even though she was a woman with many sins... she loved much, and did what she could, and sinned no more after the Savior freely forgave her and gave unconditional love.
Sis. Willis pointed out that we have 100% control of our example and how we give love. We have almost no control of who will love us...yet we spend much of our time trying to "Be" loved. Many people can love you, yet you feel empty if you have love to give and no where to put it. Put your energy into loving others...not being loved.
We need to set goals that depend upon what we do in terms of loving people and being an example. A goal is something that YOU have control over... wishes are dependant on others.
Last.. Myth busters... 1. Perfectionism... Greek definition is to achieve an objective. 2. You must earn my respect - this is terrestial... the celestial law is to respect ALL. 3. Respect is something earned... again terrestial law. Celestial law says you respect all.
